SAVE BIG BEND

Construction in this region is moving forward when in February 2026 they bypassed over 28 environmental and protective acts. Right now, border walls are rapidly expanding into the Big Bend region of Texas, which is the most remote and least-crossed section of the entire U.S.-Mexico border. Big Bend makes up about 26% of our southern border in the United States but only accounts for about 1% of apprehensions annually. Sadly, the vast majority of Arizona, California, and now New Mexico have already been walled off  so the administration has now set its sights on Texas, including this crown jewel national park in the least-crossed part of the entire U.S-Mexico border.

Right now there are active plans that would irreversibly change this region significantly. Big Bend is one of the most remote and untouched places Texas has to offer with over 800,000 acres of our national park and over 3000,00 acres of our largest state park, some of the darkest skies in the lower 48, and the Rio Grande isn't just scenic, it's a life line for wildlife, ranchers, and small communities that highly depend on it as the economy is deeply tied to the land there.

Plans for this region have shifted more than once from physical barriers to smart wall concepts to detection technology and all through this there hasn't been a clear or transparent explanation for what's actually being built. At the same time there's activity on the ground. There's land surveys being done, there's wall wall markers on the ground, and there's contracts being rewarded to construction companies. Whatever is coming it's not finalized. and it's not being clearly communicated.

This is not just outside perspective. Five county sheriffs in the Big Bend region have come out publicly and said that the wall is neither practical nor strategic in regards to the terrain, and how everything actually operates in Big Bend.

According to Big Bend Sentinel, physical wall plans have been removed from "scenic sections" of River Road and popular Rio Grande access points in Big Bend Ranch State Park" via an unofficial non-press statement. Walls through "Redford, Presidio, and up the river to For Quitman seem more certain than ever, leaving many landowners concerned that their livelihoods with ranching and farming will be destroyed."

They need to guarantee they won't put lights and construction zone anywhere near the largest dark sky preserve on Earth, that our aquifers and rivers won't be drained, that steel walls and razor wire won't destroy our parks downstream, that they won't cut our neighbors off from their land, that they won't dynamite the burial sites in Presidio or the cemetery in Langrty. Our neighbors continue to receive letters that this will happen.

This is beyond federal overreach and unacceptable to We The People.
